Learning Support & Inclusive Education

The end of September

Learning Support is well underway at Rockheights. We have been meeting with small groups to enhance reading skills as well as working in classrooms to support students in their classroom learning. Our math blocks are working out well and we are starting to move students between groups to ensure we are meeting their academic needs.

IEP meetings will be starting soon ~ watch for a notice to come home with your child in the next couple of weeks. I am looking forward to meeting with parents to help support and plan your child’s education.

Part of my role at Rockheights is to facilitate the Leadership program. This Friday we will be having a “tight and bright” day. I’m not one for tight clothing but I’m going to do my best to wear something bright to build school spirit! ¬†Also this week, we will be having a Hamburger Sales day on Friday at lunch. Burgers are $2.50 each. YUM!

Today assessments continued for those students who may require support for English as a Second Language or English Skills Development. I’m eager to open the learning support room as it’s what I love doing. The schedule for learning support is coming together ~ Mrs. Wanless (the other Learning Support teacher) and I have been consulting with teachers to best meet the needs of students in the class. Our plan is to have our classrooms open as of Tuesday (Monday is a Professional Development Day).

Tomorrow Mrs. Wanless and I are meeting with our school’s Occupational Therapist and Physical Therapist. We are eager to get the movement room up and running for those students who have sensory needs. For those of you new to a movement room it’s a great resource for many students. In the movement room, students have the opportunity to participate in heavy work, stretching, and other sensory-motor activities that calm or stimulate the brain and body. If you think you are a student who would benefit from this type of daily program, please come and chat to me and we’ll see if it can work for you!

Learning Support is well under way at Rockheights. We have started assessing and reviewing students who might require support. This year our focus is inclusive education. That means, wherever possible, students will stay in class and receive support in small groups within the classroom. That being said, there are always opportunities where students will require pull out support in small groups or on a one to one basis. Watch for more information to come!
